In addition to my work in conservation, I enjoy photography both personally and professionally. The below image is a Cape sugarbird in a field of blooming proteas in the fynbos region of South Africa. I was very thankful to have this photo featured in the Top 100 of the 2020 Audubon Photography Awards. I've always found the Audubon awards a source of inspiration, so being featured was exciting and humbling.
In 2017, I first traveled to South Africa to assist with Dr. Krista Oswald's work on Cape rockjumpers. Cape rockjumpers are an understudied, endemic, and declining alpine bird species in the fynbos region, and our research aims to understand the impacts of climate change on their behavior. The below photos are from several regions of South Africa in 2017 and 2018.
